I brought in a quartz chronograph that had stopped. The job card came back with a current draw reading I'd never seen before from any other workshop — they measured it and noted the next expected interval. The watch has been running without issue since I collected it in July.

Reasonable turnaround on my husband's chronograph — about 16 days, which was within the window they mentioned upfront. The pushers feel completely different now, much lighter than I expected. Only note is they called to tell me a part was delayed, which I appreciated even if it added a couple of days.

I have seven watches from my late father and none of them had a clear service history. The Collection Care Agreement made sense — they photographed every piece, wrote up the condition of each one, and told me which needed attention first. Two watches had gaskets replaced on the first visit. Very organised.

My dress watch had a battery that kept failing faster than expected — about eight months per cell. Escaphaus measured the actual draw and explained why: a small power leak in the coil circuit. They replaced the module rather than just swapping the battery. Makes much more sense than what I'd been doing before.

The workshop is unhurried, which I appreciated. I dropped off a chronograph with a reset function that stuck. They took time to explain that the cam-lever design in that movement has a specific adjustment point that goes out over time. When I collected it, the reset was clean. The job card is a good touch — keeps the service history in one place.

I asked about storage conditions for three automatic pieces I keep in a winding box near the kitchen — they gave me written notes about humidity thresholds specific to coastal Johor. That was not something I'd thought to ask about, but it clearly matters for gasket longevity here. Came in on the Collection Care programme and found it worth the arrangement.

Service Journeys in Detail

Case 01 — Chronograph with Non-Returning Subdial

Challenge

A collector brought in a cam-lever chronograph whose 30-minute counter hand had failed to return to zero for over a year. Previous battery replacement attempts had not identified the cause.

Solution

Full Chronograph Mechanism Service. The hammer was found to be sitting fractionally out of alignment, causing the reset to engage but not complete its arc. Pusher gaskets replaced, hammer adjusted, reset alignment confirmed under magnification.

Outcome

200-cycle test passed. All three subdial counters returned cleanly. Watch collected on day 16, within the stated window. Owner received the completed job card with test log.

"I'd tried two other places before here. The job card with the test log was something I hadn't seen before — it shows the work was actually done, not just claimed."

Case 02 — Inherited Collection Without Service History

Challenge

An owner inherited seven mechanical pieces from a family member. None had documentation of when each was last serviced. Several had been stored in a coastal environment without humidity control.

Solution

Collection Care Agreement. First visit covered full condition inspection of all seven pieces, photographic inventory, and humidity and storage notes. Two pieces with degraded gaskets received renewal during that visit. A 12-month service schedule was drafted for the remaining pieces.

Outcome

Owner left with a written inventory, a clear understanding of each watch's condition, and a schedule for the year. Three of the seven pieces were confirmed service-ready without immediate work. Two were flagged for full service within six months.

"The inventory document was the most useful thing — now I actually know what I have and what each piece needs."

Case 03 — Quartz Watch with Repeated Short Battery Life

Challenge

A dress watch had consumed four batteries in under three years, roughly one every seven to eight months. The owner had been told each time it was a faulty cell or a battery brand issue.

Solution

Quartz Battery Programme with full circuit inspection. Current draw measurement identified a coil resistance value outside the expected range. The module was exchanged, new battery and gasket fitted, and the draw re-measured after replacement.

Outcome

Draw reading after module exchange returned to within normal range. Interval note on the job card projected a two-year replacement window at the new draw rate. Watch collected within 4 working days.

"Eight batteries in three years is not a battery problem, obviously. It took someone actually measuring the draw to find what was wrong."
